ABOUT THE POSITION

DonorsChoose.org is seeking an energetic, team-oriented, and self-motivated Front-End Web Developer to improve the user experience of DonorsChoose.org's unique philanthropic marketplace. This position will report directly to DonorsChoose.org's CTO and will play a central role in an agile organization that is serious about technology.

The right candidate is a top-notch contributor with a proven track record of success, who will be comfortable in DonorsChoose.org's start-up atmosphere and ready to play a key technical role on a small, dedicated team. A passion for delivering high-quality web functionality on aggressive schedules is crucial. This Front-End Web Developer will be joining a charity with deep private-sector management experience. The DonorsChoose.org team is young, committed, and passionate, and the work environment is informal, fast-paced, and fun.

S/HE MUST:

• Design, implement, and maintain new front-end functionality for use by teachers and prospective donors.

• Estimate and deliver on rapid implementation schedules--without compromising smart development goals and principles--to build rich web UIs that are functional, performant, and scalable.

• Keep a high-volume transaction-driven web system running by troubleshooting and fixing critical bugs.

CANDIDATES MUST POSSESS:

• Experience building robust web UIs for commercial web sites and applications, including working with designers to bring pixel-perfect webpages to life from design comps.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong sense of ownership and detail-orientation throughout the web engineering lifecycle.

• Superb self-management skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with little supervision.

• Exceptional problem-solving skills and enthusiasm for tackling diverse development challenges.

• Deep expertise with HTML, CSS, cross-browser development practices, and browser degradation strategies.

• Very strong JavaScript skills: authoring sophisticated AJAX functionality, working with or without a JS framework.

• Comfortable using SQL, and working in back-end code and programming languages, to wire functionality end-to-end.

• Experience integrating 3rd-party web applications, services, and components.

• Nice to have: development experience with Java, JSP, JSTL, version control, and extra credit for experience with Spring/Hibernate.

//

Job Perks: DonorsChoose.org is based in New York City. Full benefits including paid vacation, family medical and dental insurance. Salary commensurate with experience.

Apply: Please email resume and note of introduction to web-dev (at) donorschoose (dot) org. Include "Front-End Web Developer" in the subject line and indicate how you heard about the position. Note that we will only be responding to those who we believe are most qualified for the position.
