About us
We're a cloud-based platform for location-based applications.  In a nutshell, we help developers and businesses make sense of location. The company was founded in May 2009 by Matt Galligan and Joe Stump, and consists primarily of 13 senior engineers who have worked on some of the largest, most trafficked sites on the internet, including Six Apart, Pownce, Flickr, Digg, and EventBrite. We're one of the best places to work for someone looking for opportunity to learn about scaling, infrastructure, APIs, and cloud computing from some of the best in the industry.

About you
You're meticulous and methodical about your code.  You care about web design and UI down to the pixel and aren?t satisfied until what you?re building is perfect. You understand design principles well enough to give great feedback and aren?t afraid to speak up when you have it to give. You?re autonomous, self-starting and reliable. • Experience working with Python/Django, or a willingness (and capacity) to learn the basics.
  • Side projects that don?t interfere with your day job.

To apply: Send your resume/linkedin profile to jobs@simplegeo.com. Please also include links to your work with short descriptions of your role in the project. Please feel free to include links to any online presences you'd like to share that will help us learn

Back-End Engineer at Snowball Factory, Inc. (San Francisco, CA)

$

0

We're awe.sm. Are you?
Where:
San Francisco

What:
Software Engineer (any language, but ideally more than one)

Why us:
Because we're awe.sm.

We help content publishers use sites like Twitter and Facebook to more effectively connect with the right audience. We turn the art of social media into a science by tracking the spread and consumption of content through networks of people. We turn that data into useful information in an analytics front-end and provide APIs for customers to build tools on top of it.

awe.sm is still in private beta, but already powers tracking for customers like Universal Music Group, Warner Brothers Television, and AT&T. Our extensive APIs are supported by leading 3rd-party tools like TwitterFeed, AddToAny, and BackType. The founders are experienced Yahoo! veterans, backed by established VC investors.

We're growing fast, in a space that gets more interesting every day.

Why you:
You're an experienced, creative, strong all-around engineer, with an emphasis on back-end technologies, ideally in a web context. You have proven chops and a strong interest in building big, scalable web sites. You know a scripting language -- pick one of Ruby, PHP or Python -- and ideally a compiled language like Java or C++ as well. You're not a language zealot; you pick the right tool for the job.

While the back-end is going to be your focus, we want an experienced developer who is unafraid to weigh-in on user experience discussions and help with front-end code if required. As an early-stage startup, there is going to be nothing that is "not your job", and we want you to be someone who revels in pulling the whole system together from design through to launch.

Above all we are looking for honest enthusiasm: we want you to be the kind of person who looks at this description, sees a couple areas where you might not be strong enough, and resolves to apply anyway and commit to beefing up your expertise in the other areas. The problem space we're in changes day to day, and we want somebody light on their feet who enjoys learning.

You'll be the 4th member of a fast-growing team. You get a generous stock option plan, and also health, dental, and vision coverage.

What's the job:
Our products generate enormous amounts of data. We need you to help us capture it, process it, analyze it, and turn it into useful information.

We have a big MySQL database and a lot of Memcache, and are scaling up analytics processing in Hadoop with Hive. As back-end engineer, you will be responsible for implementing these systems and then iterating quickly to extend functionality and continue to scale. Our front-end systems are in Ruby, with a middle tier mostly in PHP.

The analytics problems we're solving are right on the edge of what is possible right now. This is a great opportunity to dive into the hottest large-scale data technologies that are going to define the tech landscape for the next five to ten years.

Buzzwords:
Definitely be comfortable with:

* PHP
* MySQL
* Memcache
* MVC pattern (e.g. Rails, Zend, Django)

Bonus points for:

* Memcache
* Ruby on Rails
* Java
* NoSQL systems (e.g. Redis, MongoDB)
* Data processing (e.g. Hadoop, Hive, Pig)
* Queuing systems (e.g. RabbitMQ, Resque)
