We are looking for senior systems engineers who will contribute to our efforts in designing and implementing our distributed data warehouse. If you're passionate about data analysis of large volumes of data, application performance, distributed systems and are interested in joining a world class engineering team you might well be the person we're looking for. Qualified individuals will have a solid background in the fundamentals of computer science, and some background in distributed computing, large scale data processing, and performance tuning.
Responsibilities

* Build large distributed systems that scale well - work on improving and adding new functionality to Pentaho's distributed data warehouse
* Understand performance bottlenecks, failure points, and security holes in such large scale systems, then design and implement software that prevents such faults
* Develop tools that automate the operations, administration, and tuning of Pentaho's distributed data warehouse clusters
* Assist the technical support team in the isolation and resolution of customer issues Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical members of the project team
* Simultaneously handle multiple tasks and projects
* Support customers, partners, and the open source community

Required Qualifications

* 5+ years of relevant experience
* Must be hard working, team oriented, bright, creative, cooperative, and an exceptional problem solver
* Must be able to quickly understand technical and business requirements and be able to translate into technical implementation
* 3+ Years Experience with Java, C++ or C#
* Solid understanding and working knowledge of relational databases
* Solid understanding and working knowledge of modern operating systems and/or scalability techniques
* Proven skills in scalability analysis and performance monitoring and measuring techniques
* Experience with Linux based operating systems
* 4-year University degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field

* Knowledge of Business Intelligence tools and concepts including ETL, OLAP, and Reporting

Major responsibilities will include:

Translating the requirements into task specifications.

The development environment includes; web applications, Swing desktop applications, and distributed backend services.

Requirements

Must have a minimum of five years of experience in software design.
Previous experience in an astronomical research environment highly desirable.
Practical experience in the following languages/tools is required:
Significant Object-oriented design and development experience in C++ or Java
UNIX platform development under Linux and Solaris
User interface development in Tcl/Tk, Java or other toolkits
Significant development work in C/C++
Data analysis in Matlab, IDL, Python or Yorick

The position is for a freelance developer able to take on 30-40 hours a week.  We are looking for a long-term addition to the team, and after an evaluation period there is potential for ongoing commitment.

You will be working on a task-oriented project development timeline with written specifications, specific deliverables and deadlines.  We utilize a variety of collaboration tools that range from extensive bug tracking/version control as well as a development wiki for additional system documentation.

Requirements

  • Expert level LAMP development and management skills (min. 4 years experience) with experience creating well documented object oriented code.
  • PHP MVC development experience (CodeIgniter, CakePHP and/or Zend Framework)
  • Strong MySQL and Active Record understanding with the ability to work with high availability data sources
  • Team development experience with an understanding of Subversion
  • JavaScript Fundamentals/jQuery
  • Understanding of cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility
  • Proficiency with standards-based HTML/CSS
  • Familiarity with integrating popular APIs (parsing JSON, XML)
  • Strong knowledge of Linux, CentOS would be ideal
  • Superior English communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Within 2 time zones of EST
