Purpose Of The Role

The Five Digital Media Group (DMG) is looking for a Technical Assistant to help provide the team with hands-on day-to-day technical expertise, to help support our ambitious growth strategy centred on delivery of Video on Demand (VoD) content to new online and IPTV platforms.


Key Accountabilities

The Technical Assistant:
• Acts as a day-to-day technical contact for a technical and non-technical team encompassing operations, production, editorial and sales staff. Provides technical help. Advises on best practice, both around technology and processes.
• Is responsible for the day-to-day security, availability and performance of the platform. Ensures correct access control is in place. Runs scheduled security scanning of the platform. Runs scheduled performance testing of the platform. Ensures correct monitoring is in place.
• Helps third-party developers build against Five DMG’s technology platform. Validates that software deliverables comply with the Five DMG development guidelines. Facilitates
integration between suppliers (developers, host, CDNs, etc…)
• Develops small ad hoc software tools to facilitate the team’s workflows. Helps configure and support existing software tools used by the team.
• Inputs into the overall technology strategy, in light of operational experience


Background

Five’s Digital Media Group (DMG) is responsible for developing Five’s digital presence and growing revenues. Since formation in 2007, the team has produced and continues to manage a number of new services including:
• Demand Five (Five’s on-demand service) which is also syndicated to YouTube, Seesaw, TV.com and Sony Bravia devices.
• five.tv - the programme portal for Five’s TV channels
• Milkshake! – home to Five’s children’s programmes including Peppa Pig
• FiveFWD – a cars and gadgets site, bringing users the best of The Gadget Show and Fifth Gear
• Holy Soap – home of the flagship soaps Neighbours and Home & Away, with up-to-date storylines and gossip from all top UK soaps

The department’s overall strategic objectives are to:
• Exploit the market reach and penetration provided by the TV channels to develop commercial digital propositions
• Expand Five’s digital presence by distributing content beyond Five-owned websites through targeted content syndication
• Be experimental and agile in approach

In order to support the growing digital business and as Five are embarking on an ambitious expansion of its on demand syndication, DMG are recruiting for a wide range of new positions across the Production, Editorial, VoD Operations, Technology and Commercial teams.


Profile

• Hands-on. Should enjoy getting their hands dirty, for instance: capturing and debugging an HTTP exchange, ssh’ing into a server to check CPU utilisation, writing a cron job to archive files…
• All-rounder. Need not be a CSS guru or Ruby on Rails expert, but must have an understanding of the entire technology stack delivering dynamic web 2.0 applications
• Good communication with internal stakeholders and external third-parties
• Organised. Must be able to prioritise and follow through to completion many tasks in parallel.
• Rigorous. Must pay attention to detail, for instance ensuring that the list of user accounts on all systems is exhaustive and accurate
• Enjoys troubleshooting and solving problems. Enjoys improving systems and processes.
• Enjoys experimenting with and learning about new online technology, e.g., IPTV or HTML 5


Required Skills and Experience

• Proficient in browser technology: HTML, CSS and Javascript
• Proficient in at least one server-side development technology, preferably PHP or Ruby on Rails
• Experience of Linux system administration: ssh, shell scripting
• Experience administering , supporting, maintaining high-performance high-availability consumer websites
• Good knowledge of standard desktop software packages, e.g., MS Office


Desirable Skills and Experience

• Fundamental knowledge of server-side infrastructure: servers, firewalls, load balancers, networks, CDNs…
• Basic knowledge of server-side virtualisation technology: VMWare ESX, Amazon Web Services…
• Server-side development

- Drupal Content Management System (CMS)
- Memcache
- Apache web server
- SQL and relational databases, particularly MySQL
- Web services, using RESTful APIs with JSON/XML
- Video streaming with Flash Media Server
- Source control with SVN and/or Git
- Deployment scripting with Webistrano/Capistrano
- Administration of Atlassian Confluence and Atlassian Jira
• Client-side development
- Flash development and Action Script 2 / Action Script 3
- HTML, CSS and Javascript, including development of dynamic AJAX applications
- Video encoding codecs and containers, e.g., MP4, FLV, H264…
• Services
- CDNs, e.g., Akamai, Limelight…
- Web analytics packages, e.g., Google Analytics, Nedstat…
- Display advertising and video advertising serving solutions, e.g., Double-Click DFP, 24-7 Real Media OAS…
- Brightcove online video platform
