The New York Times is looking for a creative and talented Senior Software Engineer to work as part of the team that builds and maintains the software platforms that power our site and content management systems. As part of our platform team, you will work with the applications and APIs that consume and publish the content that supports the New York Times website and all of our downstream content consumers.
Responsibilities include:
- Building software tools and APIs for internal consumption that help other engineers leverage data and functionalities more efficiently
- Integrating third party content and other data sources into nytimes.com and into our content management systems
- Writing software applications that enhance our search engines and mine our vast archives
- Working with project managers, designers, editors, and other technologists, as part of a team to enable new site functionality
- The ability to quickly jump into and learn existing systems built in PHP, Java, or Perl
Requirements:
- Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
- A solid understanding of web application architecture and the fundamentals of software design
- 3-5+ years experience programming in PHP
- 3-5+ years experience programming web applications in Java
- An understanding of object oriented software and design patterns
- Strong experience with regular expressions
- Experience writing software that reads, writes, and manipulates XML
- Unix / Linux proficiency
- Strong experience working with SQL. Should possess the ability to manually update data records using hand-written SQL.
- 3-5+ years working in a project-driven software development environment
- Experience with REST Frameworks is a plus
- Experience with content management systems or blogging platforms is highly desired
