Lavabit is looking for someone to combine a passion for technology with a passion for customer service. We provide free and low cost Internet services with a focus on privacy and security. Our user base ranges from kernel programmers, to grandmothers, and were looking for an über geek who enjoys going out of their way to help people across the entire spectrum of technical skill use our services. Specifically were looking for a self motivated system administrator who can:
Respond to, and address support requests via Email (currently about 10-20 per day)
Monitor the system for both problems and abuse
Close accounts used for abusive purposes
Work closely with the programming to team to improve the service
We anticipate the position involving about 2 hours a day, Monday through Friday; although more time may be required as the customer base grows. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be self motivated. Candidates should have a good understanding of how client/server systems work, and experience troubleshooting network problems.
While we can provide training for candidates missing any required skills, preference will be given to candidates with the following:
Experience administrating Linux and Windows servers
Using and/or administrating a hosting service via a control panel suite
Entry level HTML/CSS/JS skills, sufficient to make updates to our KB
Experiencing configuring SNMP management and monitoring tools such as Cacti or Nagios
An understanding of symmetric and asymmetric encryption, and how they apply to SSL
The ability to write simple scripts (Bash, Perl, PHP, Python, PowerShell) to automate tasks
Experience sniffing/troubleshooting line based TCP/IP protocols (HTTP, SMTP, POP, IMAP)
Experience configuring and maintaining large/shared installations of servers that run:
Apache
IIS
Postfix
Qmail
BIND
MySQL
SQL Server
PostgreSQL
While not required for this position, experience programming in C/C# or Java, writing SQL, and testing software would also be helpful.
Candidates must be a US or Canadian citizen, able to provide character references, and willing to submit to a background check.
Compensation will be a salary plus a percentage of monthly revenue. As the service grows, so will both the workload and the compensation.
