System Architect/Engineer

We are seeking a system architect/engineer to manage our internal IT infrastructure, cloud-based web application infrastructure, and a modest number of end-user machines.

The position will be responsible for:
  • Working closely with the product and engineering teams to build and manage the cloud-based infrastructure supporting our consumer web applications.
  • Performing network and server administration tasks for staging and production environments.
  • Monitoring performance of web applications and taking appropriate steps to increase capacity as needed.
  • Conducting stress & load testing exercises, analyzing results to proactively plan for capacity and scalability.
  • Researching and selecting vendors to provide needed services for our employees and applications, maintaining these services over time, issue resolution with vendors.
  • Creating and maintaining cloud-based web application cost models to predict infrastructure costs. 
  • Creating and maintaining infrastructure design and support documentation.
  • Administering online services for email, calendaring, document storage and sharing, intranet, agile project management, and product support.
  • Implementing internal and application security policies.
  • Configuring and maintaining employee laptops (Windows and Mac OS).
  • Implementing internal solutions for virus protection, backup, password management, data encryption, disaster recovery, etc.     
  • Maintaining internal network and wireless infrastructure.
  • Maintaining virtual phone system, employee mobile phones, and VOIP solution for conferencing. 

Minimum requirements:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supporting large, consumer-facing PHP or Rails web applications running on Linux, Apache or Nginx, and MySQL DB.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supporting end user desktops/laptops running on Windows or Mac OS
  • Experience in web capacity planning.
  • Familiarity with server virtualization and cloud computing environments.
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully building and supporting large-scale web application environments.
  • B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working in a small business or startup a plus.
  • Scripting experience in Ruby, Bash, Perl, Python, or simliar language.

Skills and experience:
  • Experience operating, tuning, and scaling large Linux-based consumer web applications.
  • Experience supporting small numbers of Windows and Mac OS end-user machines.
  • Experience working with cloud-based services.
  • Experience troubleshooting application and network issues.
  • Experience with software release build and deployment processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple overlapping projects.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Education:
  • B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
