We are looking for a highly skilled software engineer to join the Gemini software team in Hilo, Hawaii. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, testing, documentation, and maintenance of software systems to support telescope operations. The candidate will interact with instrument scientists on site. He or she must be able to operate independently and meet agreed upon deadlines. Requirements:
- BS Degree in Computer Science (Advanced degree preferred)
- 2+ years of software development experience, with demonstrated problem solving skills
- Solid object-oriented design and development experience in Java/C++
- Experience with communication middleware, like JMS or EPICS
- Experience with design patterns and API construction
- Familiarity with modern software engineering practices and tools, including configuration control, incremental and iterative development, unit and integration testing and the Linux environment
- Ability to work at a 14,000 ft. altitude and be able to drive 4WD vehicles as required
Additional preferred requirements:
- Experience developing user interfaces (for example, Java AWT/Swing, Python GTK, Tcl/Tk, etc)
- Familiarity with OSGi
- Knowledge of commonly used astronomical applications
- Fluent in Spanish and English.
