America's Test Kitchen: Lead Developer, New Media (Ruby)

America?s Test Kitchen is a real place: a no-nonsense, fully equipped test kitchen located in Brookline, where a team of highly qualified test cooks and editors perform thousands of tests every year. The goal? To develop the best recipes and cooking techniques, recommend the best cookware and equipment, and rate brand-name pantry staples for home cooks, which are published in our two magazines, Cook?s Illustrated and Cook?s Country, our growing line of cookbooks, our websites, and featured on our public television series, America?s Test Kitchen and Cook?s Country TV. We are devoted to a collegial approach to cooking?teams of editors, writers, and cooks engage in side-by-side comparisons, blind taste tests, and rigorous equipment tests to determine which is the best way to roast a chicken, which pans work and which ones don?t, which brand of ketchup tastes best, and so on.

 

Our publications contain no advertising. We are a private company with no affiliations with large publishers, cookware manufacturers, or food purveyors, which means that our content is unbiased and objective.

 

 

America?s Test Kitchen is looking for a lead software developer in our newly established New Media group. Reporting to the VP of New Media and Product Development the exciting position is responsible for managing all aspects of technology development and strategic technological decision-making. The ideal candidate will join a small agile team in the development of software products for the web, mobile, desktop and beyond.

 

·         Can easily switch gears between coding, project management and strategic product development planning.

·         Has a start-up mentality and is willing to handle a number of diverse tasks.

·         Can contribute in technical as well as non-technical decision-making

·         Is highly motivated to develop state-of-the-art new media products, including social media and web applications, hand-held applications, gaming products and more

·         Works closely with VP of New Media and Product Development to meet product development goals

·         Responsible for taking new media products from idea to delivery

·         Makes strategic platform development decisions and is wired into cutting-edge open source technologies and emerging best practices

·         Responsible for building and maintaining scalable and reliable hardware and software systems architecture

·         Responsible for the design, development, coding, testing, debugging and documentation of applications to satisfy requirements

·         Will manage third-party vendors and developers

·         Recruit, hire and manage technology staff over time

·         B.S. or M.S. in computer science, or equivalent

·         Minimum of 5 years experience

·         A demonstrated track record in developing cutting-edge web applications on open source platforms

·         Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines, prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously

·         A strong communicator, with strong interpersonal skills that thrives in a team-based environment

·         Deep knowledge of the Ruby on Rails framework

·         Experience with automated testing and test driven development

·         A background in building and maintaining web applications in object oriented PHP

·         Strong database administrative knowledge including optimization and tuning of a modern RDBMS (PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQLServer, MySQL).  Experience with document databases a plus.

·         Demonstrated understanding of hosting, cloud computing and UNIX systems administration experience

·         Experience developing rich user experiences using JavaScript libraries (e.g. jQuery) and AJAX techniques

·         Strong command of web standards and best practices

·         Experience developing for mobile, the desktop (Objective C, Android, Java, Flex, AIR) or working with third-party developers to build applications that reach beyond the browser
