Gannett Co., Inc. ContentOne located in Tysons Corner, VA is seeking a creative and talented Web Developer to create cutting-edge news applications across multiple platforms.
The Web Developer is responsible for building engaging, innovative web and mobile experiences for Gannett's news content.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Developing, supporting and maintaining applications that allow Gannett ContentOne to deliver information more efficiently, on both existing and new platforms.
- Includes developing and maintaining a robust API for sharing content internally and externally.
- Prototyping and developing news applications for the web and mobile.
- Produce designed, coded solutions from start to finish.
- Work with editors and managers to understand the design and development concepts through deployment and maintenance.
- Serve as ContentOne's primary liaison to other departments in order to integrate solutions with the company's other systems.
- Other responsibilities include ongoing cloud maintenance and administration as needed for new projects.
Candidates should have:
- CS degree or equivalent experience.
- Expert ability with JavaScript, CSS, and HTML. (Knowledge and experience with JavaScript libraries, CSS3 and HTML5 desired). Firm grasp of cross-browser JS and CSS complexities.
- Expert-level ability in object-oriented programming languages (PHP 5, Python or Ruby) and MySQL.
- Expert-level ability with server-side frameworks (Rails, Django).
- Proficient using IDEs such as Eclipse and Xcode.
- Familiarity and interest in mobile development.
- Familiarity with Adobe CS applications for prototyping and design purposes.
- Ability to manage one's time effectively to meet multiple, tight deadlines.
- Strong communication skills are a must as this position interacts heavily with many departments within Gannett including USA TODAY and Gannett's network of news sites.??

- Have the ability to take the lead on developing procedures and methodologies for building and enhancing Gannett's web presence and products.
- Be obsessive about web standards, code quality, efficiency and maintainability.
- Have experience with data visualization and databases.
- Have experience building and using APIs.

- Have experience maintaining, improving and administering live sites and applications in a cloud environment.
- Have experience working in a project-driven web development environment.

- Have experience engaging in rapid prototyping and iterative product development for web-based products.
- Be flexible and assertive enough to thrive in a rapidly evolving large media company.
