Abrams Media, the fast-growing network of news sites launched by Dan Abrams, is looking for an entry-level addition to our software development team. The ideal applicant is a recent college graduate looking for hands-on experience in web development at a fast-growing media startup.
Applicants must be available to work full-time in our offices in SoHo.
Currently, we operate four sites: Mediaite (media industry news), Geekosystem (technology and geek culture), Styleite (style and fashion), and SportsGrid (sports news and statistics). We create web apps both as a means to support their content, and as new projects independent of their editorial efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Enthusiasm and willingness to learn are just as important as your coding chops! That said, the following areas of knowledge will impress us:
- Basic Web Frameworks: HTML, CSS, Javascript -- pretty standard.
- Knowledge of LAMP development: Most of our apps run on PHP/MySQL, so you should have actual experience with these through personal, academic, or enterprise projects. You should also have a good handle on one or more Unix workalike OS.
- General Web Development Knowledge: Awareness of major development frameworks, being able to get your head around a new API and figure out possible integrations, and so on.
- Willingness to learn new platforms and software packages: Just because we're working mostly in LAMP now doesn't mean we won't need to adapt in the future. If you love exploring new languages, even those you weren't required to learn for a class, this may be the job for you.
Job Perks: We're something of a skunkworks -- if you have an idea for a project, odds are you'll be able to try it out. Several of our development staff have also written articles for Geekosystem, most recently on subjects such as autotune programs and the KFC Double Down.
Apply: Contact developers AT geekosystem.com with: Resume/CV A cover letter explaining why you are the ideal person for this position 2-3 code samples (We'll take that Java battleship program you wrote for CS-101 if that's all you've got!) Applications are rolling, so get yours in as soon as possible!
