Newsquest Digital: Front-end Designer/Developer

Newsquest Digital, one of the UK’s largest media groups, are currently looking for an experienced Front-end Developer/Designer to maintain, design and develop a range of areas across our 160+ local newspaper websites from our Central London office.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and improve upon legacy code of existing sites
  • Design user interfaces for a range of sites with the team in an Agile environment
  • Use a wide range of research and design techniques including (but not limited to): sketching, wireframing, mocking-up designs, and prototyping
  • Produce final UI assets including iconography, illustration and layouts
  • Collaborate with digital team to produce responsive and elegant cross-browser interfaces with XHTML, CSS and jQuery
  • Translate design comps into standards-based, SEO-friendly XHTML and CSS code
  • Work with the back-end development team to integrate code in a proprietary CMS
  • Manage multiple projects and deliver them on time, to spec and with an appropriate level of communication
  • Stay current with evolving standards and technologies, learning new skills as needed


Technical Requirements:

  • Previous design experience in a commercial environment and proficiency using Photoshop and/or Fireworks
  • Mastery of hand-coded XHTML and CSS, adhering to W3C standards 
  • Exposure to HTML5, CSS3 and advanced CSS techniques (CSS sprites, image replacement, rgba, rounded corners, etc)
  • A thorough understanding of usability, accessibility, cross browser compatibilities, table-free layouts and semantic markup
  • Ability to produce unobtrusive JavaScript (using jQuery) and deliver progressive enhancement


Desirable skills:

  • Understanding of version control systems (SVN) and TortoiseSVN
  • CMS integration experience
  • Exposure to PHP


A passion for user experience is essential as you will be working with our Head of Design through mind-mapping, card sorting and attention mapping sessions with the rest of the team in an Agile environment in order to produce designs which focus on user interactions rather than just visual appeal.
You will also be willing to compromise and work on legacy code which requires attention as well as understand the constraints attached to running a large CMS.
