Job Summary:
The Manager of Web/Electronic Communications is responsible for spearheading the innovation of the Law School?s web sites and managing all interactive elements across the Law School web sites including conceptualizing, creating, and executing compelling web pages.  Working with the senior designer and supervising the web editor, this manager will oversee developing graphic identity elements and interactive features for web pages across the Northwestern Law site; develop an interactive strategy across the main Law School site and assisting other units and departments in developing visibility on the web; managing web projects, conducting and participating in web research and analyzing web traffic; and working with the Director of Marketing and Communications, maintain vision of and strategy for the best and most efficient/effective way to maintain branding and visual consistency for Law School web sites and communicate through electronic media. This position will hire and manage staff (one direct report) as well as freelancers on an as-needed basis.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Developing and advancing an electronic communications and web site strategy, leveraging the Law School web site, social media, and other electronic tools to create a strong and compelling online presence for Northwestern Law consistent with the Law School strategic plans and brand platform;
  • Spearheading innovation of the Law School?s web sites and electronic media; leading the effort to identify needs and opportunities, and making concrete and strategic recommendations for new features and upgrades; ensuring that the Law School web site enables users to effectively conduct business through task-oriented content and functionality, effective messaging, and an overall, user-friendly experience that harnesses emerging technology;
  • Managing all Law School web and electronic media projects; providing leadership and guidance for Law School departments or units in creating and maintaining web pages/sites; meeting regularly with department heads about their web pages/sites and advising on content, features, functionality, and web best practices;
  • Conducting research analysis (including web analytics) and using research to inform decisions about the Northwestern Law web site, including changes to the site architecture and navigation;
  • Developing and managing institutional strategies for social media outlets (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc), search engine optimization, and online promotional opportunities (web ads, etc.);
  • Leading development of all Law School web applications, and use of multimedia tools to enhance web experience; Working with applications developers to integrate back-end infrastructure with front-end and resolve platform and programming issues; Partnering closely with IT team members, especially the Manager of Application Development, to understand technical feasibility and to optimize design solutions;
  • Working closely with senior designer and web editor to create prototypes, features, and new web designs for pages across Law School site based on user requirements, usability standards, the brand platform, strategic business and marketing goals, and client requirements;
  • Working with communications editor (and other content providers), senior designer, and web editor to update/replace images and content and create new design/technical features as needed;
  • Continuing to develop HTML and development skills specific to interactive use; Researching and recommending new technologies for use on the Law School web site, including current trends and advances in CSS and HTML standards as well as best practices in usability and accessibility;
  • Identifying, hiring, assigning and supervising the work of staff and freelancers as necessary;
  • Performing related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in related field with 5 to 8 years building and supporting medium and large scale sites (concept to completion) and 3 years of direct supervisory experience or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which similar skills can be acquired;
  • Must demonstrate web development skills (at least 4 urls);
  • Expertise in HTML development tools on both PC and Mac; expertise in CSS;
  • Knowledge of Content Management Systems;
  • Thorough knowledge current web technologies and emerging trends, web information architecture, user-centered interaction design, and web best practices. Understand browser-specific peculiarities, i.e. knowledge of cross-browser portability problems and solutions;
  • Skilled in web design, graphics and multimedia platforms and programs including video;
  • Excellent ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing; Excellent interpersonal and mentoring skills; ability to work well on a team and to be self-motivated; ability to prepare and conduct training as part of standard project lifecycle; Excellent time and project management skills (manage multiple projects simultaneously, identify delays or resource shortages);
  • Ability to identify, assess and resolve web development problems (ability to determine/describe how technology tools may contribute to web solution);
  • Desire to build professional relationships across the University and promote Marketing and Communications¿ role to potential clients;
  • Energy and enthusiasm for this type of work along with a clear desire to continue to develop and grow in knowledge and expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in an appropriate field;
  • Knowledge of higher education;
  • Experience as an information architect, interaction designer, and/or graphic user interface designer a plus.
