e5 Global Media is a media and publishing company focusing in B2B magazines and event management, including the following brands: Adweek, Brandweek, Mediaweek, The Clio Awards, Backstage, Billboard, Film Journal International, and The Hollywood Reporter, as well as ShowEast, Cinema Expo International and CineAsia trade shows. The company, headquartered in New York with branches in US and UK, is currently looking to revamp its business systems and infrastructure.
Job Description
The Director of Web Development is key member of technology team that supports all technology efforts of the company. Ideal candidate will be a player/coach type (50% hands-on) with management responsibilities of a four person on-site development team and multiple project based offshore teams.
Primary Responsibilities
• Drive web technology vision working with product management team
• Direct the web development teams that are responsible for application architecture, new feature development, performance tuning, release planning, end-user training and support, and 7x24 production support
• Act as primary owner of web-based technology systems and platforms for delivering customer and business value online, including content management systems and website administration tools, content delivery network integrations, site search, and community and social networking tools and platforms
• Key member of technology team providing accountability for the efficacy and quality of our customer-facing web sites and services and ensure their reliability and performance meet and extensibility meet a diverse and changing set of business requirements as well as deliver high-quality customer experience, excellent uptime and performance
• The position is an entrepreneurial mix of exceptional team management, technology ownership and understanding, deep business understanding, ability to manage and mentor the web development team, coupled with strong interface skills working with the business stakeholders
• Monitor and promote emerging technologies as appropriate for business drivers
• Have strong analytical skills and deep knowledge of web analytics, as well as a working knowledge of methods of web usability testing, email marketing, paid search, search engine optimization, satisfaction surveys, and other critical online marketing tools and techniques
• Provide direction and directives to direct reports in the performance of their duties, establishing work priorities, and in achieving company initiatives
• Work closely with other senior managers in the planning and execution of business plans
• Ensure the online customer experience is effective and best-in-class
Skills and Requirements
• MA/MS and BA/BS in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience
• Demonstrable expertise in
o Web applications development with Java EE (Weblogic, Tomcat, Spring, Hibernate) and PHP (CodeIgniter / Kohana, PHP5/MVC/Object Oriented Programming )
o Database development (database design, stored procedures, query tuning etc) with Oracle Database and MySQL
o Largely unix based environment (primarily Linux, some Solaris)
o Internet technologies (apache web server, TCP/IP)
• Strong knowledge in Internet technology and software development lifecycle, including current industry trends and their application
• Five to seven years of professional internet work experience, ideally in large scale management of high traffic customer-facing applications.
• Experience with Agile development and managing development teams using this methodology.
• Demonstrable leadership abilities in changing, ambiguous and challenging situations
• Demonstrable presentation, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• In-depth understanding of technical issues related to web site management
• Strong grasp of web technologies and architectural principles necessary for designing scalable, extensible and maintainable web applications and services
