OkCupid, a free online dating site with millions of members, is looking for a full-time data scientist to join our data team.

Our data scientists mine our terabyte-scale database for interesting statistical trends, seeking answers to such provocative questions as: What is the optimum flirty message length? And do nerdier users have more sex? Your research will be published at http://blog.okcupid.com, with millions of readers each month. You might even find your work featured in the New York Times (http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/03/race-and-romance-an-uneven-playing-field-for-black-women/) or on Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/5586987/the-big-lies-people-tell-in-online-dating).

Successful candidates will be expected to take open-ended, "plain English" statistical questions and extract answers from a complex SQL database. Applicants should be comfortable working with structured and unstructured data, combining data from multiple sources, and putting complicated ideas down in to code. Ingenious scripting is a day-to-day part of the job.

The ability to write idiomatic Python and comfort with the Unix command line are essential. Candidates should be experts at optimizing programs, understand the tradeoffs of the memory hierarchy, and be able to work around constraints in disk speed, memory size, and CPU cycles. Candidates should be comfortable with basic statistical inquiry; strong math experience, particularly with Linear Algebra, will be helpful.

To apply: Send a resume to hr@okcupid.com.
