The RIPE Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC) is one of five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) providing Internet resource allocations, registration services and coordination activities that support the operation of the Internet globally. The organisation is set up as a not-for-profit association and the working language is English. The environment is internationally orientated, with staff from more than 20 countries.

We are currently seeking an experienced Software Engineer for our Information Services Department, which provides software development for the RIPE NCC Test Traffic Measurements (TTM), Routing Information Service (RIS) and DNS Monitoring (DNSMON) services, as well as operational support and maintenance for our global network of measurement probes.

The Software Engineer will work in an environment with professional, knowledgeable and enthusiastic engineers, where getting things right is more important than just getting it done.

New software will be written in Python and Java, so we are looking for an SWE who has worked with high-performance Python and Java applications. The entire service infrastructure is UNIX-based, so the applicant must also have experience with maintaining UNIX systems.

The Information Services Department uses Scrum, which is an Agile framework for software project management. Delivery cycles are two weeks (called sprints), managed by our ScrumMaster. We have daily stand-up meetings. The group maintains several existing UNIX systems, which include software platforms written in a mix of C, Perl and bash scripts.

In addition to the general qualifications outlined on our website, we are specifically looking for someone who:

Has a minimum of three years software development experience
Has broad knowledge of UNIX systems (especially CentOS and FreeBSD)
Has a solid understanding of networking, preferably in an ISP environment, including BGP
Is able to develop software using Python and Java (J2EE)
Is able to support and maintain software written in C, Perl and bash
Is able to understand, use and extend object orientated software, libraries and frameworks
Can demonstrate successful development of production grade software
Has experience with relational databases (especially MySQL)
Has experience with distributed, parallel and high-availability and high-performance systems
Is an excellent team player
Has excellent social and communication skills
Has very strong spoken and written English

Desirable qualifications:
Experience with cfEngine, Django, Mason and RRDtool
Experience with programming in C
Familiarity with open source software
Experience with web development (Web 2.0 technologies)
Familiarity with cloud computing
Interest in measurements, analysis and statistics
Experience of working in Agile development environments (XP/Scrum)
Experience with source code control systems (SVN preferred)
Affinity with the ISP environment and RIPE community

The annual salary for this position is between 46,253 and 57,806 (before tax). This includes the standard 8% annual 'holiday pay' and a 5% end-of-year bonus. Monthly salary is between 3,411 and 4,263 (before tax).

We offer excellent secondary benefits to our employees, including a relocation package for those recruited from outside the Netherlands, help with finding somewhere to live, 30 days' vacation, in addition to public holidays, and a generous training allowance. For a complete overview of our secondary benefits, please visit the Employment Opportunities section of our website.
