Ingenuity is seeking a Python developer for a contract to help develop a series of information visualizations based on internal scientific datasets being used to rapidly discover new medicines for understudied diseases. This is primarily a design project, with the goal of designing and developing a set of information displays based on existing datasets. While the data is scientific in nature, the visualizations will involve categorical data as well as numerical data, and be designed to facilitate large-scale understanding and comparative analytics. I am particularly looking for developers that have built data-rich “information visualization” web sites whose primary purpose is to communicate and understand large, complex datasets through a dashboard-like UI, as opposed to sites that are more transactional (e.g. e-commerce) or productivity/workflow (e.g. email or collaboration). Non-scientific examples include http://www.everyblock.com, http://manybills.researchlabs.ibm.com, and the data graphics shown on http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog.
REQUIRED
1. Strong Python development experience with Django or lightweight Pythonic web frameworks and templating languages.
2. Expertise in JavaScript, HTTP, HTML/DOM, CSS and modern JS toolkits.
3. Experience designing and developing end-to-end Python-driven web sites with data-intensive, HTML/CSS-based UIs.
4. Ability to develop quickly and independently, across client & server, in an iterative prototyping process.
5. Strong communication skills and a healthy interest in working on a cool life sciences and biomedical research project.
DESIRED
• Experience developing information-rich web sites is a big plus. Strong preference will be given to candidates that can show a portfolio of such work.
• Knowledge of statistics as well as Excel power usage (especially Pivot tables) will help. Experience with Spotfire or Tableau a strong plus.
• Bioinformatics background and/or an understanding of biology and genetics preferred, but not required.
• Minimalist design sense
• Experience with any of the following will be helpful:
a. Semantic Web technologies and associated Python-based toolkits will help.
b. Qualitative data analysis of categorical datasets
c. Processing large scale matrix or hierarchical scientific datasets.
d. Python-based charting and plotting tools (e.g. matplotlib).
e. Python-based life sciences toolkits (e.g. biopython).
Preference will be given to candidates that have experience generating web-based information visualizations or displays using Python, display an aptitude for learning new domains, and can code up high-quality web prototypes quickly. Experience with life sciences or bioinformatics is desired, but not required -- we can teach you what you need to know for this project.
Along with you resume or CV, please submit:
• Examples of infoviz or data-rich web sites that you have created.
• If you don’t have your own, please submit examples of other information visualizations that you find particularly compelling along with a short description of why you believe these to be good information visualizations.
• Your website or blog, if any
• Open source projects you contribute to, if any
