The US Green Building Council Charlotte Region Chapter (USGBC CRC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and advocate for sustainable buildings, sites, practices, products, and lifestyles, through the education of professionals within the building and related industries, academia, public and private organizations, and the greater Charlotte, NC community.
JOB DESCRIPTION â?? EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Executive Director's primary duties will include responsibility for the administrative,
financial, event planning, communications and membership support consistent with the
vision, mission and strategic plan of the US Green Building Council Charlotte Region Chapter.
Outreach to Membership (30%)
The USGBC CRC is an organization that is almost entirely driven by volunteers. The Executive
Director will be expected to help increase volunteerism from CRC membership,
partner organizations and the community.
â?¢ Work with the Board and Member Circles to organize events and activities that educate our
mission to Chapter members and the community, including but not
limited to:
o LEEDâ?¢ User Groups
o Membership Meetings
o Educational Events
o LEEDâ?¢ Technical Workshops
o LEEDâ?¢ Building Tours
o Newsletter
o Website
o Special Projects
o Public Events
â?¢ Raise visibility of Chapter and elevate relevancy within community context.
â?¢ Develop partnerships and alliances with government, community and private
entities to further Chapter goals and objectives.
â?¢ Serve as informational conduit about green building practices, standards,
market dynamics and their associated benefits.
â?¢ Serve as Chapter representative to local, regional and national constituencies.
â?¢ Assist statewide chapter expansion through branch development in areas within our territory.
â?¢ Assist implementation of member circles through various practice sectors,
including new construction, existing buildings, commercial interiors,
neighborhood development, healthcare, etc.
â?¢ Develop and sustain a paid membership program and generate chapter revenue through workshops
and programs.

Financials and Fundraising (30%)
The USGBC CRC seeks to increase its ability to effectively serve its members and the
community by consistently seeking sponsorships, membership contributions and other
financial assets.
â?¢ Develop and implement a fundraising strategy with help of Board of Directors
and serve as the primary point of contact for donors.
â?¢ Oversee staff and volunteer management of Chapter finances, including all
reporting obligations.
â?¢ Work with the Treasurer and/or Accountant in supervising the financial
management or the Chapter including budget preparation, financial reporting
and analysis, monitoring budget and ensuring fiscal responsibility and
sustainability.
â?¢ Work with the Treasurer and/or Accountant to ensure maintenance of 501(c)(3)
tax exempt status.
â?¢ Be responsible for pursuing and securing grants
Connection to USGBC National, South East Regional Council and other USGBC Chapters (20%)
USGBC CRC is dedicated to collaborating with our partner organizations in the Carolina's and in
our region. We actively participate in the USGBC South East Regional Council and with our colleagues at USGBC National.
â?¢ Serve as point-of-contact to and collaborate with USGBC and other chapters;
stay informed on all LEED, chapter best practices and chapter-related issues.
â?¢ Participate in chapter administrator and executive director conference calls
â?¢ Use USGBC chapter extranet to manage chapter information
â?¢ Complete and submit annual chapter activity report (and associated
documentation) to USGBC National
â?¢ Connectivity to local community and stay connected with the community leaders
within the CRC region
Organizational Management & Board of Directors (20%)
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the
consistent achievement of the chapter's mission and financial objectives. The Executive
Director is expected to continue to develop a thriving organization by growing the
membership, expanding and improving the programs and services offered to the
members and the community, increasing fundraising, and by providing a highly-visible
presence for the organization.
â?¢ Generally perform duties normally associated with the Executive Director of a
501(c) 3 non-profit corporation.
â?¢ Attend and participate in all meetings of the Chapter Board of Directors (Board)
but do not sit on the Board as a voting member.
â?¢ Attend and participate in all chapter committee meetings and chapter events.
â?¢ Serve as a primary staff contact to the Board.
â?¢ Support the Board with materials necessary to perform its leadership role.
â?¢ Implement Chapter policies and procedures with approval of the Board.
â?¢ Prepare monthly Executive Director activity reports including measurable results.
â?¢ Manage the Chapter's administrative staff including interns to provide effective
use of staff time for the benefit of the Chapter.
â?¢ Assist in identifying needs for additional human resources (e.g. administrative
staff, assist with recruitment, hiring and budgeting for staff positions, etc.).ï?
â?¢ Prepare Chapter annual report for membership, stakeholders.
â?¢ Ensure appropriate and adequate insurance coverage for the Board and
Chapter.
â?¢ Ensure compliance with all State and Federal regulations.
DAY TO DAY RESPONSIBILITIES
In addition to the timely and effective execution of duties as outlined above and
developed over time in collaboration with the Board, the Executive Director's conduct
must reflect and advance the integrity and intentions of the Chapter. As Executive
Director of the Chapter, the Board will look to the Executive Director to excel in the
following areas:
Working Relations: The Chapter views collaborative partnership as a sound foundation
for effective working relations. We recognize aspects of mutual commitment between
staff and Board as we work together to advance a common vision. We anticipate the
Board and Director will forge collegial, supportive and rewarding working relations.
Code of Conduct: The Chapter aspires to embody characteristics of inclusiveness,
civility, transparency and accountability in its deliberations and activities. We anticipate
that the Executive Director will establish and maintain open and participatory dynamics
as a leader of the organization.
Professional Development: The Chapter intends to maintain a cutting edge awareness
of green building practices and linkages to sustainability and livability considerations.
Education is integral to this leadership position. The Executive Director will actively work
to obtain LEEDâ?¢ Professional Accreditation within one year of employment with training
assistance from the Chapter.
Institutional Presence: The Chapter prioritizes a high degree of professional and
personal decorum in all its public and private interactions. We anticipate the Director
to establish and maintain a stellar image of the Chapter in all materials, presentations
and personal conduct.
Livability: This position requires a flexible schedule which will require evenings, occasional
Weekends and some travel. The Chapter supports its staff in their pursuit of meaningfulness and
satisfaction. Family and other personal matters is a cornerstone of livability and do not
necessarily conform to a set schedule. We expect the Executive Director to
exercise appropriate discretion as to work hours and routine in pursuit of balanced
priorities between professionalism, efficacy and livability.
Sustainability: The Chapter seeks to integrate sustainability considerations within all
facets of business, education, and outreach. The Executive Director, along with the
Board, should ensure a â??Walk our Talkâ? attitude in pursuit of the Chapter's Mission,
including taking into account the Triple Bottom Line when making organizational
decisions.
Other Duties as Needed: This list is not an exhaustive list and the Executive Director will
be given additional job responsibilities as needed and directed by the Board of
Directors.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Driven â?? Self motivator who will take ownership and complete the task at hand
Passion -- Passionate about and engaged in environmental and social issues and a
strong desire to promote green building and further the Chapter's mission.
Financial â?? Proven record of fundraising and grant writing success with corporate, individual,
Foundation, and grant support.
Education -- A bachelor's degree or higher in business administration or environmental
science/sustainability or related field. Other, relevant degrees will be considered.
Management -- Five (5) or more years of experience with for-profit or non-profit
organizational management.

and projects; sets objectives and goals; breaks down work into the process steps;
develops schedules and task; anticipates and adjusts for problems and roadblocks.
Technical Knowledge â?? Has at least a basic understanding of all the principles and
methods of ecologically sustainable materials and practices in the building industry,
and an expertise in at least two categories.
Business Acumen - Knows how businesses work; is knowledgeable in current and
possible future, practices, trends, and information affecting his/her business and
organization; is aware of how strategies and tactics work in the marketplace.
Conflict Management - Experience with project management and interpersonal skills

COMPENSATION
The USGBC CRC seeks an entrepreneurial talent to fill this position and will create a
compensation package commensurate with the preferred candidate's experience.
Financial Incentives
Base salary with potential incentives linked to achievement of specific objectives
determined at time of annual review. Opportunities for additional bonuses may be
available for meeting agreed-on performance goals.

Flexible Schedule
The USGBC CRC recognizes the importance of work/life balance and the benefits of flexible
work life scheduling in achieving such balance. The Executive Director will be
expected to exercise their discretion in meeting work and life priorities.
Paid Time Off: Paid vacation time to accrue monthly on pro-rata basis and holiday pay.
Education/Professional Development
USGBC CRC supports the professional development of its staff and will support the Executive
Director to gain relevant professional education in the field of green building, including
LEEDâ?¢ Accreditation, LEEDâ?¢ Technical Workshops and/or other appropriate
educational opportunities.
Travel (primarily within Charlotte and regionally)
The Executive Director will be asked to travel both within the Carolinas and to
regional and national events sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council, such as the
Southeast Regional conference and Greenbuild.
Review: Quarterly performance and salary review with Executive Committee
Location: The organization has an office space, however is open to having the Executive Director
Work from their home.
Timeline: This position will remain open until the appropriate candidate is identified.

OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES AND CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
In the interest of promoting success for the Chapter, while under the terms of this
agreement the Director will not assist any business or organization a) in competing with
the Chapter, b) in preparing to compete with the Chapter, or c) in hiring any
employees of the Chapter.
While employed by the Chapter, the Director is expected to immediately report to the
Board Chair any financial, organizational or institutional interests or relationships that
might be construed as a Conflict of Interest. The Director will be required to sign, follow
and enforce USGBC's Conflict of Interest Policy.
