About.com is actively seeking a highly
motivated Systems Administrator to join our Web Hosting Operations
group. The ideal candidate for this opportunity will be experienced in
working with diverse, high traffic websites; be experienced with various
UNIX and Linux platforms; and possess a competent networking
background. The ideal candidate must also be able to architect long
term solutions to provide for redundancy, scalability, and ease of
management for a large internet operation. To be successful in this
role you must be a proven team communicator who is able to effectively
and collaboratively work across many departments. This opportunity
requires a sharp, motivated, and meticulous team player who believes in
the support and deployment of open source solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure for the continued reliable uptime of the About.com service.
- Manage FreeBSD and Linux server clusters, roll out system updates, streamline cluster deployment, and enhance system security.
- Provide application support including software installation, patching, and upgrades.
- Focus on reliability, site performance, and application tuning.
- Assist in troubleshooting network and service issues.
- Routine monitoring of services and networks.
- Contribute to the architecture and design of our platform as we continue to grow.
Requirements:
- BS in Computer Science and/or a minimum of 3 years Unix/Linux system administration experience.
- Experience with FreeBSD, Linux, Apache, MySQL, and Perl.
- Internet and web hosting experience is required.
- TCP/IP experience and the ability to troubleshoot application and network issues.
- Ability to write shell scripts in csh and/or bash.
- Ability to modify Perl scripts.
- Must be organized and able to document systems and applications.
- Strong problem solving ability is a must.
- Must be available to participate in on-call rotation and some off-hours work.
