Jellyvision Lab/Chicago, IL
The Jellyvision LabNeeds a Junior Linux Systems Administrator
Jellyvision, the interactive company best known as the creator of the YOU DON'T KNOW JACK series, is looking for a junior level systems administrator to join our production team to help set up and manage project servers, databases, URLs and servers.
Â
We create and host rich media, conversational applications that help our partners convert more of their web site visitors into customers. (See
http://www.jellyvision.com/examples.php for an example of our approach, called Interactive Conversation). These Flash applications need to capture and store individual user and performance-based data in a database, for access and analysis by both Jellyvision and our partners. And we need our files to play nicely with whatever database protocols and back end â??hand offsâ? we have with our various partner sites. Â
Â
The primary responsibility of this job is the setting up and administering of Web and database servers for new projects as well as troubleshooting existing servers. If you are primarily interested in Web Development/programming, this is not the job for you. We are looking for someone who lives and breathes system administration and has Linux administration experience at the command line.
 Must Haves:
* Experience with the administration, configuration and troubleshooting of common Web server and database technologies, as well as the practical usage and implementation of said technologies:
o  Apache 2
o  Linux (RedHat/Fedora) CLI
o  Windows (IIS, Exchange, Active Directory, etc.)
o  MySQL (familiarity with replication is a plus)
o  Shell scripting
o  PHP
o  HTML
o  CSS
 Â
* The ability to self-manage and multitask in a fast paced production environment. Things change often at Jellyvision, and usually under the pressure of major production milestones. Therefore, it's imperative that you're able to juggle multiple tasks, track changes, AND maintain attention to detail, while inside the pressure cooker.
You Should Also:
* Write clear, easy to understand code and client-ready documentation for your work.
* Be able to read through and understand existing code.
* Be prepared and willing, during any downtime, to help our IT Manager with various tasks (reviewing security logs, technical support/help desk, media archiving, etc.).
Â
Â
The â??Nice to Haves:â?
Â
* Experience with media production - working with media, audio files, graphics, animations, and all the tools required to make them â?? Illustrator, recording software, Flash, etc.
* Knowledge of other programming languages (especially Java)
Â
And in terms of characteristics, you should beâ?¦
Â
* Innovative â?? comfortable venturing, unguided, into unknown territory. All of our development is centered around our proprietary authoring environment, which will require some fast ramp-up, and all of our applications push the boundaries of what Flash is supposed to be able to do.
* Flexible and resourceful â?? each project entails a different partner, different scope requirements and unique protocols.Â
* Team-Oriented, as you'll be working closely with our talented group of Flash experience engineers, directors, and project managers
* A great communicator, written and verbal
* Organized with great attention to detail
* Fast & Efficient
Â
Anything else?
Â
Yes. We only hire nice, bright, people who are willing to work hard. Jellyvision is a group effort and our System Administrator must be capable of working collaboratively with creative, technical, and external client types. Everyone at Jellyvision shares a commitment to excellence and a desire to work in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. And if you've got any voice talent experience, that might come in handy down the road. Please check out www.jellyvision.com to learn more.
Are there any perks?
Â
* Competitive pay, including stock opportunities. (if you've got any requirements in mind, please specify them in your cover letter)
* Fully-loaded benefits plan:Â 401K with matching and fully-covered disability, life, health, and dental insurance
* Casual dress. Come in a sweatshirt, jeans, whatever, like everyone else here.
* Creative work environment. We are lucky to work in a place that is full of intelligent, talented and innovative folks. Although most hours the place is deathly quiet (we're a focused bunch), this is punctuated with hilarious outbursts and general merriment, which makes for a nice way to spend the day.
* Free food. We have a stocked kitchen that pretty much guarantees you breakfast, snacks, lunch and snacks again.  Including a lifetime supply of Hershey's Minis, pudding, and Easy Mac apples, carrots and yogurt, too.
* Easy transportation. We're really close to the "L" and the Halsted (#8) bus line.Did we mention our yoga classes? Three days a week, right in the office. Heavily subsidized by Jellyvision and heavily optional, btw.Â

Please email us a resume and a thoughtful cover letter that outlines three reasons why you are someone we should interview, focusing on how your past work experience has prepared you for this kind of position, and, if you've got some, a couple of URLs to recent on-line work. We weigh cover letters heavily and cannot consider resumes without one. Again, if you have specific salary requirements, please let us know them as well.

Who are we? In case you're wonderingâ?¦Â
Â
Jellyvision is a small (30-personish), creative, focused, and driven company, with a real vision for human-machine interface. We tend to be known for the interactive entertainment properties that we have created, including the YOU DON'T KNOW JACK interactive series and the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire CD-ROM. Our expertise, however, lies in interface design: we create intelligent interfaces that simulate human conversation. We call our form of interactivity the Interactive Conversation Interface, or â??iCi.â? iCi allows machines to interact with individuals with such seamless pacing and awareness, such personality and wit, that it feels like a real person is just behind the machine. iCi seemingly brings machines to life. Please check out our web site, www.jellyvision.com, for more info and examples.
