Americans United for Separation of Church and State: Web Producer/Developer

Web Producer/Developer to steer the architecture, design, development, and forward direction of an advocacy organization’s online presence. Will work closely with the Web Associate to promote church-state separation via the Internet, using cutting-edge Web development technologies and services. The ideal candidate will have strong skills for creating interactive and engaging experiences online, managing backend systems, managing thousands of content items, and helping to overview and guide the entire online presences of Americans United.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with Web development (both front-end and CMS-side), user experience, information architecture, and interface design. He or she will also carry a keen interest in public policy, and a strong personal commitment to supporting constitutional civil liberties.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Maintain content associated with the online presence of the organization, but also spearhead and optimize internal methodologies for content management.
  • Redesign standalone AU Web sites where/when strategically needed, to implement emerging technologies and greater visibility (design- and content-wise).
  • Apply user testing, information architecture and rapid prototyping to improve navigability and accessibility.
  • Use professional multimedia software to develop effective solutions for online communications projects.
  • Manage several ongoing projects in a fast-paced, news-cycle-driven working environment.
  • Help in new media (videos, audio, etc.) communication projects.
  • Be ready to assess the existing Web strategy of AU, and actively steer the Web direction, and improve/modernize existing systems, of the organization.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, application development, Web development, graphic design, Web design, or a related field.
  • Expert understanding of standards-based HTML (XHTML + HTML5), CSS (2 vs. 3), and progressively-enhancing / gracefully-degredating JavaScript (with and without the help of a library). Experience with marking-up XHTML email templates a plus.
  • Understanding of information architecture, Web production process and methodology, stakeholder consultation, and developing a site for multiple audiences using lessons of Edward Tufte and Jared Spool.
  • Close familiarity with content management systems. Experience using Convio CMS (or another proprietary, payment-gateway system) a strong plus. Will have some demonstrable experience with the administrative/development side of a CMS, which might include PHP/blog-based ones (extensible WordPress in particular).
  • Understanding of, and experience with, data storage on the Web. You know (and can explain) the difference between flat files, MySQL, and XML.
  • Demonstrable experience developing sites for cross-platform, cross-browser audiences. (As in, you must be able to show work you’ve coded that works and looks solidly in the latest Safari as well as native IE6.)
  • Extremely well-tuned and versatile design process -- and PSD-to-front-end-template process. You know Photoshop guides, layer management, slicing, and Save-for-Web-ing like a Swiss army knife, you know the difference between PNGs and GIFs and JPGs, and you know where site optimizations come from.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Passion for creativity and innovation.
