The Communications and External Affairs department (CEA) of The New School is the center of branding, messaging, and promotion for this complex university. Integrating numerous disciplines, including web and online media; video, photography, and broadcast; marketing and advertising; public relations and internal communications; editorial; publication production; and graphic design, CEA presents the face of this university to help build awareness and visibility, grow enrollment, and support alumni outreach and fundraising. Central to this creative and strategic operation is finding the right ASSOCIATE ART DIRECTOR to assist in the direction and management of the print and online design team and to create important print and/or digital materials for the university.
While the specific responsibilities and qualifications are noted below, it will be some less tangible qualities that we'll be looking for in our search:
- a professional who excels at all the traditional print design and production techniques as well as new media and web design
- a great manager of people and time, with an innate understanding and respect for deadlines, process, and communications
- an innovative and collaborative designer who will push the boundaries of The New School's visual identity and interpret it in inventive ways

- Reports to the Art Director in the Communications and External Affairs department. The Graphics office has a staff of six, plus a student design assistant.
- Is a hands-on designer who is equally adept at print and web formats.
- Assists in providing art direction, generates creative ideas and helps clients define and solve their communications objectives for hundreds of projects annually, including view books, catalogs, annual report, search pieces and brochures, signage, merchandise, advertising, and invitations, as well as websites and other digital marketing initiatives. Advises on typography, layout, information architecture, palette, use of photography or illustration, and other graphic elements and techniques. Most importantly, ensures that the design fulfills the client's objectives, reinforces the brand and takes into account the big picture efforts of the institution.
- Works in tandem with the Art Director, Director of Production, Project Managers, and other senior CEA staff to manage process, schedules, assignments, productivity, and quality of work from each member of the Graphic Design team. Ensures that designers remain motivated, focused and well-integrated into the CEA department as a whole and communicates that process clearly to colleagues.
- Along with the Art Director, represents the Graphic Design department at "client" meetings with New School colleagues and is able to interpret their desired goals, message, and target audience. Advises on appropriate design action to fulfill those needs.
- Creates web and print-worthy files that reflect effective and efficient production values.
- Works with photo editor to select and manage digital assets through Extensis Portfolio. Makes recommendations for new photography based on anticipated needs for upcoming projects.
- Stays abreast of changes in the graphic design and online media industries and of new techniques and programs that will improve the efficiency and creativity of the office.
