Wake Forest University: Executive Director, Creative

(Winston-Salem, NC)

Position Summary:

Position is charged with determining the strategy for visually representing Wake Forest both online and in print. Develops and enforces the graphic design and visual standards for CER properties and platforms; provides creative direction of new projects; possesses knowledge of social media and web technology; and serves as chief creative partner to Associate Vice President, Communications and External Relations.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages and leads a team of designers, digital producers and marketing professionals to deliver content across multiple platforms.
  • Enforces look-and-feel/visual identity and vocabulary of CER communications.
  • Provides high-level/directional guidance on all communications and, where appropriate, serve as lead designer.
  • Oversees graphic designers and develop their talent in accordance with emerging best practices.
  • Develops and enforces the graphic design and visual standards for WF properties and platforms; provide creative direction of new projects.
  • Provides highest level of quality control over concepts and projects.
  • Works close with University Advancement to develop strategies to support strategic initiatives.
  • Work across the WF community, providing guidance and value to enhance communications capabilities.
  • Serves as chief creative partner to Associate Vice President, responsible for implementing identified strategies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts or related field or equivalent visual design; management experience required. Eight-to-ten years experience working with large-scale web sites, publications, e-marketing and/or advertising.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability

  • Must be an out-of-the-box creative thinker who can balance the institutional brand with novel concepts.
  • Ability to develop creative programs and design concepts that both meet CER objectives and advance the Wake Forest brand.
  • Must possess superior print and design capabilities—must know how to work in both media for integrated campaigns.
  • Must be well aware of social media and web technology and able to provide evidence that demonstrates both understanding and experience.
  • A strong working knowledge of experience design, brand development, interactive commerce and creative process.
  • Must possess a thorough understanding of interactive communications and delivery systems, processes and user interface design, as well as best practices.
  • Ability to interface with faculty, staff and University leaders on projects and develop concepts to amplify communications campaigns.
  • Ability to lead projects from concept to completion. Apply best practices in user interface and interactive design.
  • Knowledge of layouts, graphic fundamentals, typography and limitations of the web; must understand Flash and have the ability to storyboard or translate ideas to designers and develop innovative motion graphics solutions.
  • Knowledge of HTML, DHTML, CSS. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator a plus. Knowledge of Dreamweaver, Macromedia Flash preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently; ability to set and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to generate multiple concepts for a project, initiative or campaign.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing with clients and colleagues.

Physical Requirements

Sedentary work: exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.  Talking; hearing; repetitive motions.  Close visual acuity.  Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
