Hoefler & Frere-Jones (H&FJ) is a leading digital font company, with a body of work that includes some of the world's most famous typefaces. H&FJ is seeking an experienced Chief Technology Officer to assure the successful execution of the company's business mission of providing high-quality fonts to end-users on an growing number of platforms.
This involves directing the continued evolution of our web presence, working with the company founders to develop new lines of business, and contributing technological expertise to help shape our digital product and service offerings. This position requires the ability to envision the company's offerings in the context of evolving digital environments and bleeding-edge technologies, the experience to manage the implementation of distributed web applications, and the insight to plan for risk and growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy & Planning
- Work with the company's founders to identify opportunities and risks for delivering the company's services through existing and emerging channels, including analysis of competitive services, opportunities for innovation, and assessment of marketplace obstacles and technical hurdles
- Make technological recommendations for refining existing service offerings and creating new ones, in order to address changes in technology standards, customer expectations, behavior patterns, and best practices
Implementation & Deployment
- Identify and evaluate appropriate technology platforms (including web application frameworks and the deployment stack) suitable for the delivery of the company's products and services
- Supervise the evaluation, development, implementation, deployment, and monitoring of all web-based services
- Select and manage staff and vendors, and establish processes and standards for project development, vendor conformance, quality assurance, and performance profiling, to ensure that projects are completed in a timely and acceptable manner
- Contribute a technical perspective to the company's sales, licensing, marketing, and UX endeavors
- Make recommendations for the customer service and support process, with particular focus on web-based services that implement the support function
Operational Management
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technology standards, industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices, and keep management apprised of changes in customer expectations and standard practices in the industry
- Ensure that technical standards and best practices are maintained across the company, and advise management with respect to internal technologies
- Ensure that the company's technological processes and services comply with community expectations and applicable regulations for privacy, security, and social responsibility
EXPERIENCE
Required Experience:
- 10+ years experience in technology management, with proven experience building, managing and motivating software development teams (both internal and outsourced) as well successful experience taking over existing development and IT teams
- Significant experience in the cloud computing and application delivery space, including experience with new computing architectures and implementation of networked systems
- The ability to communicate at both a technical and business strategy level with senior executives
Strong candidates will also have:
- Development or management experience with SaaS projects
- Experience working in fast-growth companies (including startups)
- A Masters degree in Computer Science
