Agile PHP and JavaScript Web Developer/Tech Lead (contract) at Sky (London, England)

We are looking for exceptional developers and tech leads to join a new team building a sales application for 15,000 in house users in contact centres across the UK. We will be using the very latest web technologies (HTML5, CSS3, Web Sockets, Web Workers, Offline Storage) to build the fastest most usable and most reliable application possible.

You will join and help to build a team of PHP and front end web developers who deliver high quality software following an agile development process (Scrum and XP based). The ideal candidates will be good at "getting things done", and like the idea of team owned code; well maintained, and refactored where appropriate. You test drive the writing of your code, and are comfortable pairing with other pleasant folk. You follow best practice in PHP and JavaScript development and care about the code you write.

The sales application team is part of a larger programme of work that is expected to run for multiple years, delivering both to internal and online customers, with opportunities to get involved in many different areas.

Responsibilities:
- Designing and implementing a new web app to serve in-house users.
- Helping to establish best development practice in the team.
- Helping to design flexible back-end services to support the application
- Identifying bottlenecks in, and profiling of the application codebase.

Essential:
- Extensive experience with object-oriented PHP.
- Extensive experience writing well tested object-oriented JavaScript.
- Independent problem solving skills, ability to write code that scales well.
- Understanding of how the web works, from HTML to HTTP.
- Flexibility: we're a small team, but we move quickly.
- Embrace agile software engineering practices; TDD, Continuous Integration...
- Experienced crafting semantically correct HTML, quality structured CSS and tested, unobtrusive JavaScript.
- Experience of MVC web frameworks such as Symfony.
- Experience of use of JQuery / Prototype or other leading JavaScript Libraries.
- Experience with functional testing tools such as Selenium.
- Solid understanding of cross-browser technology issues and how these can be addressed in development.
- A practiced philosophy of Test Driven Development.
- Commercial experience scaling and tuning PHP web applications.
- Experience working on high-volume websites.
- Bachelors degree or equivalent industry experience.

Desirable:
- A working knowledge of Java web applications (Servlets etc).
- Zend Certification advantageous.
- Linux Shell Experience.
- Web services and syndication.

Personal:
- A track record of getting things done.
- Take pride in the code you write, and ownership of the codebase.
- Enjoy showing off your wares well do regular showcases of new work to the product owners and business stakeholders.
