The Technology department at the Brooklyn Museum seeks a programmer to help manage and develop the institution?s web presence. You?d be working with a small team on a variety of web and in-gallery projects related to art, community, visitor experience and open access. The job:
The Technology Department at Brooklyn Museum seeks a computer programmer to develop and manage
- All technical aspects of the Web site and CMS
- Web-based Intranet applications such as a label-editing tool, architectural drawing management system, and a building maintenance system
- Standards for programming, user experience, documentation and security
- Reviewing code and establishing development guidelines
- Other duties as assigned
We are a small shop, and all of our staff members work across disciplines and support each other. Accordingly, qualified candidates for this position will have two or more years' experience, and will possess a range of skills across three categories: FreeBSD/Linux systems administration, Web programming, and user experience.
We?re looking for:
Qualified applicants will have extensive experience and specialized skill with items in group A, group B, or both.
Group A
- Extensive experience with interaction/user experience design and information architecture
- Solid understanding of and commitment to web standards, accessibility guidelines, and web usability
- Experience conducting usability studies and running usability tests
- Experience working on mobile platforms (e.g. iOS, Mobile Safari, Android)
- Strong command of HTML and CSS
- Familiarity with object-oriented PHP
- Familiarity with object-oriented JavaScript and relevant frameworks (e.g. MooTools, jQuery)
- Experience working on large, multi-part, CMS-driven web applications
- Familiarity with version control, e.g. SVN
Group B
- Extensive experience working on large, multi-part, CMS-driven web applications
- Extensive FreeBSD and/or Linux systems administration experience
- Extensive experience setting up, configuring, maintaining and administering LAMP-based web servers
- Experience deploying to cloud computing platforms, e.g. Amazon Web Services
- Strong command of object-oriented PHP
- Strong command of HTML and CSS, as well as understanding of and commitment to web standards and accessibility/usability guidelines.
- Strong command of object-oriented JavaScript and relevant frameworks (e.g. MooTools, jQuery)
- Strong shell scripting skills
- Familiarity with at least one modern scripting language, e.g. Ruby
- Familiarity with database administration and SQL, especially MySQL and MSSQL
- Experience working with 3rd party APIs
- Familiarity with version control, e.g. SVN
- Experience with e-commerce and PCI compliance
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other departments and personnel, to manage multiple responsibilities independently, while adhering to established departmental technology standards.
