The role: Linux Systems Administrator (SRE) YouTube
The operations team at YouTube (a Google company) does more with less. We serve billions of page views a day with a small group of clever, motivated and talented people. YouTube comprises more than 20% of the world’s http traffic and is the second most visited site in the world.
As a YouTube SRE (Think Über sysadmin), you will be involved in every aspect of YouTube’s production site. From the design stage to service troubleshooting, from performance analysis to capacity planning, from DNS to networking to application [mis]behavior, you are ultimately responsible for making sure that YouTube always works. We take that responsibility very seriously, but if you think you've got what it takes then we're eager to talk with you.
Working in the Linux System Administrator team, you will wear many hats for YouTube’s entire production site: first responder, performance analyst, service architect, capacity planner, tools developer and monitoring expert.
Responsibilities:
* Linux system administration, including configuration, troubleshooting, and automation.
* Capacity analysis, service configuration, monitoring, traffic routing and troubleshooting for one of the highest traffic websites in the world.
* Analysis of complex system behavior, performance and application issues.
* Interacting with and spinning up services on the Google Production platform including Google proprietary monitoring, resource management, traffic management, and distributed computing systems.
Requirements:
* BA/BS in Computer Science preferred, or equivalent experience.
* At least 3 years experience with Linux/UNIX systems administration.
* Solid scripting skills, Python experience is a big plus.
IP networking, including familiarity with the functionality, operating, and failure modes of networks.
* Proven technical troubleshooting and performance tuning experience.
* Experience in a high-volume or critical production service environment.
* Ability to handle periodic on-call duty as well as spider-sense awareness of site health.
